I have a girlfriend. She’s an internationally known pop/rap artist, and she sings to me almost every single time I get in the car. 9 times out of 10 she’s on the radio while I’m driving.
She even says my name in her songs
Ok… maybe she’s not my girlfriend. Maybe she doesn’t even know I exist. But for a singer to say “Delerius” in 3 different songs, I definitely feel the love.
..
*ahem*
Anyways.
There are a couple of different ways I could go with this post.. I could do that.. but I want to save that one until Monday.. or at least I’ll say it’ll be Monday but I’ll actually lead you on for a few more weeks.. like someone else I know >.<
..
Let’s talk names. I’ve been reading through my blog archives this week and I found a post talking about all my characters. Wow is it out of date. I’m not even going to bother linking it, half those characters don’t exist anymore, and half of the ones that do have different names. And I don’t like half of them half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of them half as well as they deserve.
..
Most of these are characters I don’t even play anymore. In fact, I don’t play any characters anymore, so that’s all of them.. But I thought it could be an interesting conversation starter anyway.
Akuya. Technically my second character, but he was my first “main” for awhile. Male blood elf warlock. His name comes from the Tagalog word for “older brother”: Kuya. When I went over to the Philippines all the kids there called me “Kuya”, and the name kinda stuck.
Akousumon. At one time, I was going to make a priest twink. She’s a troll. The name comes from the Greek for “I hear you” plus “mon”. Go listen to Basshunter’s DotA please.
Delerius. I don’t really know how or why I came up with it. He was a night elf originally, and I guess I was going for the slightly-insane not-really-there-mentally concept of the Emerald Dream. I almost changed his name for a more Tauren-sounding name when I transferred, but #1 the name was still very druidy and #2 I had started to have an online personality under the name. Obviously on this blog here, but also on pretty much any other forum, my username is Delerius. Or if you see a DeleriusDruid, very good chance it’s me. Feel free to say hi.
Delanna. I kind of don’t want to spoil it, in the hopes someone will find the reference. She was known as Gray but she was Black was the clue I gave. I think it’s very fitting for a gobliness mage.
Kitye. Named for a girl named Katie who liked to draw pictures of kitties. She was a hunter, and all her pets were named Bob. She has since been deleted.
Laiyla. Just a random name. My paladin was a female blood elf, I wanted some pretty sounding name. Not related to anyone I knew, although it does turn out to be the name of my manager’s youngest daughter. Not creepy or anything.
Stupidhuman. The name of the ugliest human warrior ever. And that’s saying something. Humans are ugly.
Merabeth. Named after and rhymes with the name of someone I know. She was the character that went with the alliance leveling group on another server.. one that hasn’t been touched in months.. All my other characters there started with “Mera”.
Meradela. Combination of “Mera” and “Del” with an extra “a” for good measure. Draenei huntress, she made me realize that the Draenei starting zone is actually pretty awesome. I hate alliance, but I might somehow be convinced to make a Draenei. Tunak tunak tun!
Delazarus. For some reason, the name Lazarus has always seemed to me like a priest’s name. My priest on the Arena Tournament server was named Lazarus. In keeping with the Del tradition, I made a priest named Delazarus back on Drak’Tharon. Then deleted it to make another with the same name. And again. And again. And again. This current incarnation of Delazarus is a Tauren Shadowpriest, which is several degrees of awesome.
..
SIDENOTE: Did you know that if you delete a character, then create a new character with the same name on the same server, it will keep all the macros for that character? Remember that macros are stored server-side, so it actually makes sense. I haven’t had to recreate the macros for any of the duplicate priests since the first one.
..
How did you come up with your characters’ names? Which one would you say is your most original? And no, HölyBóvine for a tauren paladin does not count.

I think of names that sound pretty then try variations of the spelling if names are already taken.
Usually the inspiration for names come from the books I read.
Liyhe was my main in FFXI – I couldnt think of a name so i hit the random generator and it spit out Liyheehl or something like that. I i chopped off some of the ltrs and boom!
And Slice was my nickname i college so ….adding other words in front and boom!
Other names are also inspiration from my fav characters in books.
Kurik my worgen warrior is a character in a book.
Telanarra -wow’s random name gen might have tweaked it a bit was so long ago i don’t remember
Reshtagdai- Wow’s RNG
Glendor- old Dnd character name.
Blinkfloyd- self explanatory but Ari did tell me about it
Mordeaps – cause it sounded better then lesdeaps
generally i tend to go with the RNG for names. unless i get inspired to attempt to be creative.
I also try to think about am I going to like this name as I level since I am to cheap “read broke” to pay for a name change.
